We at Elk Mountain Expeditions have all worked for larger rafting outfitters before EME opened. It was a great experience, but it can be tough on both the staff and the guests.
When you work for a large company, it is easy to become complacent with your quality of work. You can do the bare minimum, avoid larger responsibilities and let the other guides pick up your slack. When you do want more responsibilities you have more people to compete with.
As a guest, it can be frustrating getting lost in the hustle and bustle of large trips. When you’re going out with 10 other families it can take away from the experience of whitewater rafting for the first time.
Going with a smaller company you’re guaranteed a small trip size and quality service. When you’re on the river and there are only two other boats on the trip, you get to know one another and it’s easier to take in the beauty of the Roaring Fork Valley when there isn’t a line of boats in front and behind you.
When you work for a small company there isn’t any room for slacking off. Every person’s role is crucial to the daily operations. This year we added two more guides and an office person, bringing our full-time staff to a whopping 6! You know the best part about working for a small company? You know everyone’s name! They become more than just your co-workers; they become family. We know that Kira is always wearing some sort of purple, if it’s game day, Delfo is wearing his Black Hawks jersey and you’re guaranteed at least three bad puns a day from Casey.
Our goal at EME is to give everyone a personalized rafting experience. We want to share our love of rafting and the outdoors with each person on the trip. We believe the best way to accomplish this is by staying small and focusing on making every trip a memorable adventure. So join us this summer and let us show you what it means to be a small outfitter in the great outdoors!!
